On the Road with Mike: Memphis Italian Festival

I flew down to Memphis, Tennessee on Thursday to attend the 21st annual Memphis Italian Festival in Marquette Park, which benefits the Holy Rosary Parish School. The festival offers a number of family friendly activities including contests, musical performances, grape stomping and of course endless concessions cooking up Italian American food favorites from sausage and pepper sandwiches to zeppoli. For me the highlight of the three-day celebration is the Galtelli Cup Bocce Tournament that kicks off the fair. Each year 32 teams compete on six courts in this single elimination tourney. My team Bella Sera (representing Delta Wholesale) was comprised of me and a few friends I became close with back when I coached the Memphis Grizzlies: David Hudman, Bill Lucchesi and Jim Lucchesi.

Our team took the title in 2005, ‘07 and ‘08, but we had to sit last year out due to a scheduling conflict so I was concerned we might be a little rusty. The tournament is always competitive, however this year we were met with an unexpected obstacle. After the first round on opening night the sky opened up and heavy rains poured down hard and long, effectively shutting down the tournament and leaving the bocce courts completely submerged under water. This forced all of the contestants to return on Friday to complete the competition. We were doubtful that the flooded courts would even be playable, but the festival volunteers did an incredible job restoring the courts. They got there early the next morning, panned water, raked, added dirt on top and managed to get 5 of 6 courts back in working order.

Despite the disruption our team maintained its focus and returned to the competition in top form. It’s unusual for all four guys to give consistently good performances, but we all played well and contributed. After a fun yet demanding day on the courts, team Bella Sera came away with its fourth Ralph Galtelli Cup. Afterwards we celebrated our victory at the Rum Boogie Café located in the heart of downtown Memphis on the corner of Beale Street. Rum Boogie happened to be celebrating its 25th anniversary so they featured different live blues bands every couple hours and the place was hopping. We capped off a great weekend with a great night on the town.

On the Road with Mike: Fifth Annual Dick Vitale Gala

Nick Bollettieri and Mike Fratello attend the Dick Vitale Gala in Sarasota, Florida in 2008.

I’m in Sarasota, Florida for the Fifth Annual Dick Vitale Gala to benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Every year they recognize two people for their outstanding achievements. This year’s honorees are former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo.

A number of coaching greats and sports personalities will be in attendance tonight including Magic Johnson, John Calipari, Nick Bollettieri, David Brooks, Tom Green, Mike Greenberg, Seth Greenberg, Bob Huggins, Tommy Lasorda, Steve Mariucci and Bruce Pearl.

I’ve attended the last couple years and witnessed some very special and moving moments. One time they spontaneously auctioned off four front row seats to the upcoming Duke-Carolina game. In 2008 Vitale pledged the use of his home for a 50-person catered dinner and he asked for $100,000. Pat Riley raised his hand, but told Vitale to forget about hosting the dinner. Instead, they’d go eat at a restaurant. Inspiring acts of generosity like that have transpired over the years.

I’m looking forward to spending a night of high energy with Dickie V who is the greatest at helping raise money to continue cancer research. His goal is to raise $1,000,000 for a pediatric research grant and local hospitals. If you would like to make a donation, please call 1-800-4-JIMMYV.

On the Road with Mike: The Czar’s a Star of the Silver Screen

I’m making my motion picture debut in Just Wright, which opened in theaters today. The role wasn’t exactly a stretch – I play myself. But Marv and I had to collaborate with the script supervisors to make sure they got the broadcast lingo, well, just right. I’ve already read some positive reviews and heard good things from several friends as well. Can’t wait to see it myself.

The folks over at Fox Searchlight made a wise decision to feature me prominently in the movie trailer instead of Kenny and Marv. I think Marv has been giving me the cold shoulder because the camera angles were better on me than on him.

On the Road with Mike

The creative chops of some cutting-edge chefs have people taking notice and touting Chicago as the capital of molecular gastronomy. But a number of restaurants inspired by old world traditions and quality put the Windy City on the culinary map long before this trend blew in.

One of my favorite people owns and operates some of my favorite restaurants in the city. A close personal friend for many years, Phil Stefani has been in the game since opening his flagship restaurant Stefani’s with his Uncle Lino in 1980 and is currently the purveyor of a number of outstanding restaurants in the Chicago area. Most of them serve an assortment of authentic pasta dishes, exceptional steaks and excellent seafood in addition to daily specials.

The three that I get to most frequently are Riva on the Navy Pier, Tuscany on Taylor Street and Phil Stefani’s 437 Rush. Turns out I’m in good company: former President Clinton loves going to Tuscany in Little Italy, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has hosted a number of private events and fundraisers at Riva.

Whenever I go in I ask what’s new because they are always changing up the menus. Oftentimes I leave it up to Phil’s discretion to choose one of the special pasta and/or fish dishes he’s making for the day. To keep the menu fresh and his staff inspired, Phil takes his head chefs to Italy two or three times a year to come up with new creations. Last summer I joined Phil in Tuscany for a week prior to heading to the Folgaria Basketball Camp for kids located in a beautiful ski resort up in the mountains of northern Italy.

437 Rush Executive Chef Federico Comacchio shared the recipe for one of my go-to entrees: Lake Superior Whitefish with Cherry Tomatoes. Click here to learn more about Phil’s signature restaurants.

Lake Superior Whitefish with Cherry Tomatoes

Ingredients (four servings)

2 lb Lake Superior white fish

2 fl oz white wine

2 oz unsalted butter

1 oz chopped Italian parsley

1 lb ripe cherry tomatoes

1 oz capers

.2 oz dry Italian oregano

3 fl oz extra virgin olive oil

2-3 shallots peeled and chopped

salt and black pepper

Preparation

Wash and cut the cherry tomatoes into halves. Drizzle some oil overtop and season them with oregano, capers, salt and pepper to taste. Slowly bake the cherry tomatoes in the oven for one hour at 200 degrees. When pressed for time you can bake them at a higher temperature for a shorter period. Remove the skin from the fish and cut it into three-inch thick filets. Season the filets with salt, pepper and extra virgin olive oil. Preheat a Teflon pan and begin roasting the shallots over medium heat. Then add the fish to the pan and cook the fish on both sides until it is no longer translucent. Before the fish is finished, deglaze the pan with white wine and add a pinch of salt. Turning off the flame, add the butter and the parsley. Place the fish filets on top of the cherry tomatoes on the plate and dress with the sauce from the pan.
